Trash Tower

On Wednesday morning, Carol Baum officially started filling the trash tower.
Each week, Carol walks a two mile loop near her Newbury home and picks up the trash that she finds. Students from Whittier Vocational Technical Regional High School in Haverhill have built a 12 foot high trash tower that has clear sides. Each week, Carol will deposit the trash that she collects into the trash tower.
NES Student Council members each deposited a piece of trash that Carol has collected. In addition to the tower, students from Triton High School Art department designed a beautiful sign to educate the community about decomposition. For more information, visits Carol’s website at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/480096185/trash-tower

Happy Veteran's Day!

Senior Chief Petty Officer Ron Hudd spoke to NES students on Monday about his time served as a Navy Seabee. Senior Chief Officer Hudd served honorably for 30 years and spoke to the NES community about his time in the Navy and what it means to be a veteran. The students were very interested in his speech as well as his uniform.
The entire NES community wants to thank Senior Chief Officer Hudd as well as all veterans for their service to our country!

Molly Sullivan Sliney visits NES

We are so fortunate that the PTA sponsors programs that support the C.A.R.E.S. culture here at NES.  Today, we had Olympian Molly Sullivan Sliney, a distinguished member of the 1988 and 1992 United States team visit our students in grades 3-6.  Molly also was a member of the 1987 and 1991 Pan American teams where she won two gold medals.
Since retiring from competition, Molly has been an active public speaker and fencing instructor.  Her speech was inspiring and enjoyed by all!

NES Halloween Parade

The annual NES Halloween Parade will take place on October 31st from 1:30-2:30.  A short classroom party will take place following the parade with healthy snacks in accordance to our Health and Wellness policy.  Please also be mindful of any food restrictions in individual classrooms.

Students should bring their costumes to school in a bag and will change into their costumes at school.  Costumes should fit over students regular clothes and must be appropriate for school.  Any costume that is deemed inappropriate, will be asked to be removed.  No blood, gore, or weapons please!  Students may wear masks, but they must be appropriate.

Students will be dismissed at the normal time.  We are asking for your assistance to make this year’s parade safe and fun for all.

Lockdown Drill at NES

Today we practiced our first Lockdown Drill.  The students did an exceptional job. The Newbury Police assisted in the Lockdown Drill.  NES was complimented by the Newbury Police in saying this was one of the best Lockdown Procedures they have participated in.  I'm very proud of the NES School Community.

The New Buddy Bench at NES

Not sure what to do at recess?  NES introduced the new Buddy Bench on the playground.  The bench is labeled and is a safe spot for students to go when they are having a hard time finding someone to play with.  At our first all school meeting, Ms. Yando and Ms. Pasquarello acted out some scenarios where a child might feel left out or too shy to join in with his/her classmates at recess.  NES students are encouraged to notice if someone is sitting on the Buddy Bench and ask them to join them in a recess activity.

Some inspiration to help get us ready for the first day of school...

A Back To School Poem
By:  Karen Cignatta Patton

The summer's end is nearing
and the weather's turning cool;
It's time to hit the books again
and head on back to school.

Brand new clothes adorn me
to mark this special day;
Pencils and a notebook
are neatly tucked away.

Yet I am rather nervous
as I travel up the path;
Will I still know my History,
my Spelling, and my Math?

Feelings of anxiety
now fill me head to toe;
I hope to see my closest friends,
as I have missed them so.

Smiling teachers greet me;
A classmate warmly calls;
Familiar sounds of laughter are heard within the halls.

My empty chair awaits me
as I contemplate and grin;
Eager and excited for the school year to begin.

Hope you are enjoying your summer vacation!

I hope you are enjoying your summer vacation!  Remember to take time to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and rejuvenate.  Summer is also a wonderful time to catch up on some reading.  If you are looking for some summer reads, you can check out the Association for Library Service to Children's book lists at:  http://www.ala.org/alsc/2014-summer-reading-list.  I look forward to hearing about the wonderful books you read over the summer!
See you in September!
